International Health Insurance

Education Abroad participants are provided with GeoBlue international health insurance coverage through MSU. Know your coverage details before you leave.

GeoBlue Coverage

Program directors, assistants, and participants are automatically enrolled in GeoBlue, and the coverage is included in program fees. Your coverage begins the day your program starts and expires two days after your program ends. To familiarize yourself with the coverage, review the full policy.

Highlights of your coverage include:

  • 100% reimbursement of reasonable expenses
  • $500,000 period of coverage maximum benefits
  • $0 deductible
  • Medical evacuation (up to $250,000)
  • Repatriation (up to $100,000)
  • Bedside visits (up to $3,000)
  • Mental health services

Independent travel outside of education abroad program dates is not covered by GeoBlue. but you can purchase a separate policy. If you are traveling before or after your program dates, you are strongly encouraged to purchase additional coverage and may wish to consider purchasing a separate plan through GeoBlue Travel Insurance.

Medical Assistance Abroad


If you need emergency assistance, call the local "911" equivalent.


For non-emergency assistance, contact GeoBlue before seeing a medical provider. GeoBlue can help you find a local Network Provider or can, in some cases, help facilitate a guarantee of payment agreement with a non-Network Provider. GeoBlue operates a 24/7 Customer Service line at 1-610-254-8771. They may also be reached by email globalhealth(at) (allow at least 24 hours for response by email).

Network Providers are less likely to require that fees paid up front. You should contact GeoBlue before you visit a Network Provider so they can provide you with paperwork to bring to your appointment. Non-Network Providers are not covered by GeoBlue, but they may be able to negotiate a guarantee of payment agreement so you're not required to pay any expenses out-of-pocket. Contact GeoBlue to investigate this option.

If you don't have access to either of these options, you may need to pay out-of-pocket expenses. Save your original receipts and submit a reimbursement claim.
