High-Risk Destinations

MSU policy does not support student (undergraduate or graduate) travel to the high-risk destinations listed below unless a waiver to the policy is obtained.

Any students intending to engage in MSU-affiliated travel to one of the high-risk destinations listed below, including those traveling with faculty, must submit a waiver request at least 4 weeks before their scheduled departure. Groups may submit a single waiver request provided all travelers will be following the same itinerary. Faculty or staff traveling with students are encouraged to submit the waiver request on behalf of their student(s).

The waiver request is an online form.

Travelers should make use of the following resources as they draft their waiver request:

Faculty and staff traveling to one of the destinations listed below are not required to obtain a waiver. However, anyone with travel health and safety questions is encouraged to contact our office.

The list of high-risk destinations that require a waiver changes regularly, so bookmark this page and check it frequently. The Risk and Security Assessment Committee considers the following sources in determining when a waiver is required: the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Travel Health Notices, the Office of International Health and Safety, and MSU evacuation provider analysis.

Important Note for Education Abroad Programs and Participants: There is a separate process for securing waivers for programs run through the Office for Education Abroad. For more information, please visit our education abroad webpage.
