Accessing Healthcare While Traveling Internationally During COVID-19

More information on COVID-19 related travel restrictions can be found at msu.edu/coronavirus/travel-advisories

Students, faculty, staff, and approved guests on MSU-sponsored international travel are eligible for comprehensive international health insurance and medical and security assistance provided by International SOS. This coverage includes medical evacuation, but there are limitations to evacuation during a pandemic that you should understand before you travel.

  • If you have COVID-19 symptoms, you should call International SOS immediately for guidance. International SOS must comply with local and national regulations with respect to testing and treatment. This may impact their ability to refer you to one of their preferred facilities or place a guarantee of payment. You may submit a reimbursement claim if you incur out-of-pocket medical expenses.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19 there will likely be local restrictions placed on your ability to travel. Neither MSU nor International SOS can circumvent local and national government regulations.
  • Like most international health insurance policies, MSU’s coverage has a pandemic exclusion. This means that non-medical evacuations relating to COVID-19 are not covered by MSU’s policy. Instead, travelers should plan to return to their home country by commercial flights.
